TITLE
Network Engineer
LOCATION
Groton, Connecticut
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Network engineer in a multiple platform/multiple protocol environment responsible for physical and logical network topologies in a distributed LAN/WAN environment. Develop detailed network specifications based upon customer requirements and adherence to standards. Perform critical evaluations of existing customer networks and develop recommendations for improvements. Perform product analysis and cost justification. Perform hardware/software configuration and setup of various networking components to include, but not limited to, routers, bridges, gateways, Ethernet switched, concentrators, hubs, CSU's, DSU's, and modems. Perform problem determination, resolution, and testing for multi-protocol routed LAN/WAN environments. Interface with local and national carrier services in regard to bandwidth specification, provisioning and problem analysis. Prepare and deliver technical presentations.ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE:
- Must have an in-depth knowledge of the following communications protocols: TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, and Appletalk.
- Must have knowledge of router configuration and operation (Bay Networks preferred).
- Familiar with RIP and OSPF routing protocols.
- Knowledge of Ethernet, ISDN, Frame Relay, T1, T3, and ATM.
- Working practical knowledge of all cabling technologies associated with the above.
- Knowledge of hub configuration.
- Experience on the configuration and operation of Ethernet switches (Bay Networks preferred).
- Experience with network security and firewalls.
- Knowledge of the following operating systems: Novell, UNIX, Windows NT, Windows 95, and DOS.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
- Strong project management skills. Must be able to manage multiple projects concurrently.
- Must be a self-starter and able to use own judgment/initiative to undertake activities with minimal supervision.
- Must have the ability to provide complex LAN/WAN problem resolution.
- Good oral and written communications skills.
- Ability to work alone or within a team environment.
- Previous network design skills.
- Financial analysis skills (life cycle costs, depreciation, etc.).
EDUCATION REQUIRED:
- BS/BA in Computer Science or Computer Engineering with three years of directly related experience or seven+ years of directly related experience.
- Certification in Computer Sciences (AS degree or technical school) with five years of directly related experience.
- Certified Network Engineer is a plus, but not required.
ORGANIZATIONAL "FIT" CONSIDERATIONS:
- Position may require overtime.
- Pager on-call is required.
